History

February 3.1957 was a great day in Stranda, with the opening of the first ski lift between Voss and Oppdal. When we are looking back at the facts about this lift, we would like to smile, but at that time it was bold plans that came to reality.

The T-Bar lift was 850 meters long with a height difference of 270 meters, and had a capacity of 140 p / h.

It was driven by a Volkswagen petrol engine. Poles and T-hooks were made of wood with a total cost of NOK 70 000, and a number of volunteer hours.

To finance the lift it was founded a company in which 330 shareholders participated. Many of these were individuals who invested 100 NOK each. The Bank and some companies had the largest deposits, and people from Ålesund also signed up.

At that time the cost of single tickets for adults was 1.50 NOK, and children 0,50 NOK. A season ticket was 100 NOK, and 50 NOK. The season tickets was not valid if the line were longer than 20 m.

Opening Day:
The opening day Chairman Richard Urkedal said: "Not many of you can think of the social benefits this lift can provide the village and district in the future. It will open new possibilities to the village when tourists open their eyes for this new winter site called Stranda".
If it took some time, he got it right in many ways. Stranda Dkiresort became an important center for alpine sports.
A lot of technical problems:
Most of the equipment was made locally, and the securing part was rather questionable. Derailments were many, and it is truly just lucky that no one were badly injured. It was extremely hard for the staff to haul up all the boxes at the derailment. Automatic assistance was not provided, and the "employees" worked mostly as idealists.

Snow Problems:
The snow conditionswas allwys very good in Stranda Skiresort. That was not the problem. Most problems came when there was to much snow, so the lift had to stop. One year it could not be started before Easter because of to much snow.

Good years:
Electricity came after 2-3 years. The old lift was repaired, and the customers were numerous. That resulted in long lines and a great test of patience. Thanks to a lot of free work, they kept the operations "floating"", but new investments was not in place until 1969. At that time they built a new lift on the other side of the valley, the so-called "Roaldlift".

Stranda Skiresort has unique locations. Highway 60 runs through the valley at 450 m above sea level. It is 6 km from the center of Stranda, and 40 km from Aalesund. The valleys fit so well together that it was just minutes away from one lift to the other. If you are at Roalshorn 1230 m above sea level, looking across the valley to the top of "Egga" 1000 m above sea level, you can go from peak to peak in 20 minutes.
In 1989 they built a new lift on "Roalden" where the old one stopped, going all the way to the top of Roaldshorn, 1230 meters above sea level. The top lift is driven by a diesel engine.
Here starts the famous "Alperittet", a mountain telemarking race that goes stright down to the center of Stranda.
The view is amazing and slopes countless, no forest prevents selecting the best turns downhill.

New lift at "Furset":
The old lift was kept until 1975. Then a modern T-bar lift was built, with capacity of 900 p / h.

The situation was now completely changed and the visit of skiers increased greatly. The lift was going in parallel with the old, and the thought was to use both. But the first year the amount of snow was so great that there was only one meter to the wire at some places, and that was the final days of the old toil soldier.

In 1989 a new T-lift was built,"Egga Mountain lift". It starts at the top of "The Furset lift", with the top station at 1000 m. above sea level.
There is great family-conditions in the slopes.

Preparation:
In the beginning it was the customers themselves who cross-trodden the trails in the morning, but no one complained.
No one knew about the machines that could do such things.
Early in the seventies a preparation machine was finally in place.
Bad power and accessibility made this machine soon to be replaced with a new one that could cope with the amounts of snow in Stranda.

Service facilities:
There was a lift in 1957, but no one thought that there was a need for toilets, or a cafe. A small kiosk were built after some years, but the barns around the lift was used as toilets for many years. People had to eat their food in the cars. In 1973, there were "crisis". It was going to be held a championship in alpine skiing, and the Crown Prince of Norway, Harald, was to be a guest. A barrack with toilets was bought in. The requirement for a cafe was stronger, and finally in 1977, it was built with proper toilet, kiosk and ski storage.

Parking:
In over 10 years, highway 60 was used for parking. The parking lot expanded little by little

Stranda Skiresort has been in a tremendous development in recent years.
Boxing Day 2009, was a brand new four-seater chair lift ready on "The Furset side" of the valley, and replaced the old T-lift from 1975.
The chair lift has a capacity of 2400 p / h. At the same time, there were built a pavilion at the top station of the lift.

Even after one season, February 12. 2011, was the big six- seater on "Roald" ready. This is a so-called telemix lift. This is Scandinavia's largest height difference between top and bottom. Entire 618 meters. Telemix means that it is a combination of chair lift and gondols. "Roaldslift" is 2100 meters long and your way up to 1062 m takes about 7 minutes.
At the same time we also opened a new pavilion / restaurant on Roald. This is located at 1042 m. above sea level and offers an unforgettable view over fjords and mountains in addition to good food including local products on the menu.

Slopes have been repaired, and we have modern snow systems that helps ensure the snowy winters.

The area around the resort has been regulated, and small cabin villages have emerged.

7 lifts, 17 slopes of varying degrees of difficulty and great freeriding areas meet now the visitors from near and far.

We welcome you to Strandafjellet.
